Sometimes a Grenada vacation can be more than just fun, it can be restorative, and even transformational. Here is a review by Amanda from Spain. She shares a bit about how she felt before and after her Grenada Vacation. Thank You Amanda.

The answer to the question of “shall we go to Grenada?” is definitely, resoundingly, a deep and heartfelt OH YES!

I went to Grenada, in my own words, a broken person. I had reached a crisis point in my life that I couldn’t see a way round. Life had become unworkable, and I needed to get away from everything to try and find some perspective.

Grenada, in many ways, might have thought twice about having me had they known just how exhausted and out of touch with myself I had become. I have to give incredible credit and thanks to the Grenadians who put up with too many rants, and to the wonderful Mandy Burton, one of Gerry Copsey’s fabulous team of employees at Just Grenada for listening so carefully to what I needed – you don’t often see that kind of love in today’s internet-based tourism industry and it was exactly what I needed.

THANK YOU – ALL of you.

You will simply never know what you gave me, and I will never be able to repay either for your kindness or your tolerance of my often exasperating and unfair rants. I am embarrassed with hindsight that I was so exhausted that my mouth ran away with me … Message to Self : Next time you’re in that bad a state, please take a bus to the MOON and don’t come back …..

To the amazing Grenadians I met, with your lovingly dignified, gracious and forgiving way, I can only say that you are wonderful. You put up with me as I floundered around trying to find myself again. Words fail me.

To Just Grenada, Blue Horizons and Petite Anse, a huge healing process has, without question, begun … And you have all helped me reach this point. I am so very very grateful.

The chef/owner, Brian Benjamin (aka “BB”) was born in Grenada and professionally trained in Europe, and the food represents a perfect inter-mingling of the two… Grenadian and European… the best of both worlds.

Everything is fresh, local, and unimaginably delicious. My personal favorites are the Crabback appetizer, and the Prawns in lobster sauce. I can’t rave enough about pure deliciousness of this food!

As if the fabulous food isn’t enough, the restaurant is in a great location, downtown in the heart of the capital, St. Georges, on the Carenage, literally sitting over the ocean. It is casual open-air dining with a million dollar view, watching the boats drift by on the crystal turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

You will be enthusiastically welcomed and waited upon by BB’s British wife, Anna, who will chat you up about everything you need to know in Grenada. And she will probably know your uncle’s wife’s sister’s hairdresser!

The whole experience will leave you ready to sell all your belongings and move to Grenada…that’s what I did!

I knew I struck gold when I discovered Unwind Bar at BBC Beach. It was sheer coincidence that I happen to be at the right place at the right time. But that’s another story.

My guess is that you have never heard about Unwind Bar. Even my friend, a frequent Grenada visitor whose favorite beach is BBC Beach knew nothing about it.

You know what? <del datetime="2009-03-14T19:39:41+00:00"> Right this second I’m having second thoughts telling you about Unwind Bar… maybe I should just keep it a secret.</del> Okay, okay that was my selfish streak imposing itself again… let’s just ignore it.

Yes, as I was saying, Unwind Bar at BBC Beach, also known as Morne Rouge Beach was a golden find…

3 things I really like about Unwind Bar

First, it’s on BBC Beach. Unarguably one of Grenada’s best beaches.

Second, the owners Rocky and his lovely wife are utterly fantastic folks (and good cooks). Their gracious hospitality shines through.

Third, the place is just Nice. Real Nice. And different. The name Unwind was a brilliant choice, because as soon as you arrive that’s exactly what you want to do,… leave your worries at the door, have a drink, chill out and unwind.

That’s how I felt on my first visit to Unwind Bar. I was hung over from a party at Club Karma the night before. When I got to Unwind I just sprawled off on a beach chair, under the coconut and tamarind trees; closed my eyes; and listened to the waves. Oh yeah, I also ordered a drink (gotta fight fire with fire… ) … okay just kidding, the only drink I had was Rocky’s formula for hangover –Angostura Bitters and Club Soda. And It Worked!!

Two Drawbacks

Unwind Bar is not open every day of the week. They open on most weekends, some holidays, and on days when they are catering for tour groups. So please call (437-407-0906) before you go, that way you can also make arrangements for lunch (try the Grilled Mahi Mahi with rice or the Pork Barbecue).

Taking size into consideration the volume of people that visit BBC beach each day is less than Grand Anse beach (Maybe that explains why Unwind Bar is not open everyday).

The reason is simply because Grand Anse beach runs alongside the main road, and is therefore easily accessible to those without a car. To get to BBC Beach without a car, it’s at least 25 minutes walk (both ways), with a hill to consider.

I translate all that to mean more space, and less disturbances on BBC Beach, which for me is a plus. So to some this is a deterrent, to others like me it’s a big plus.

Getting to Unwind Bar at BBC Beach

From Grand Anse Round About (Wall Street):
Follow the street that leads to Spiceland Mal, KFC, Coyaba, Spice Island Resort, etc. Go all the way to the end, turn left (passing at the police station). At the stop sign make a right turn onto the Morne Rouge road. Continue along this road passing the (Mount Cinnamon and Flamboyant hotels). Arriving at the intersection at the top of hill, turn left and then make a right at the 3rd driveway down towards the beach (Morne Rouge Bay commonly called BBC beach).

Already on BBC Beach:
There is only one public access to the beach which located at the extreme right end of Unwind Bar. Once at the beach walk towards the opposite end. Unwind Bar is located exactly center of the beach.

Check them out…

I went back to Unwind bar on two other occasions before I left Grenada. And I intend to make it a regular spot on future Grenada Vacations. Next time you are in Grenada give them a call (473-407-0906), and go have some good Grenadian food and drinks, in a lovely atmosphere, on one of Grenada’s best beaches

A Vacation Review by the Clarkson Family From Canada

Hi there, we are from Canada, and we enjoyed the beautiful island of Grenada. It truly was an island of spice where everyone is nice. My husband and two kids (9 and 6) visited Grenada for the first time for one full week of relaxation and sightseeing. We loved it. We had a plan for everyday of the week, and made it to see the beauty of this island.

Grenada, amazingly is large, and in about half day trips, we saw lush and mountainous views, surrounded by the ocean. Wow!! What a sight it was.

We miss Grenada very much already and the kids remember everything we did.

We visited Fort George and Fort Frederick

We went to the Etang Lake Rain forest and were lucky to see the monkeys up close and personal…what a sight

We also got a chance to visit Sauteurs, Leapers Hill, the waterfalls (which were amazing and beautiful); and we also visited Grenville

The countryside, and the friendliness of the people were wonderful.

The kids loved seeing Grenada’s culture, and the bus ride around the island was an experience to remember. We also took a taxi which was easier for us to certain spots, like the chocolate factory, where we were given a tour, and a lot of information about how cocoa is processed (we actually walked on cocoa beans barefoot).

Grenada we shall return, with your beauty, Grand Anse Beach, the lush greenery of your island, and the friendliness of your people…. keep smiling, and we miss you, land of spice.

I‘ve never rented a car in Grenada and not have some dissatisfaction in one form or another. And I’m not alone. Listen to my sister and her husband talk about their drama with a well known Grenada car rental company and you’ll either laugh or cry. So what’s the deal? Were we just unlucky, or do most of these car rental companies suck?

Well maybe a little of both, but I am more inclined to think that we were a bit on the unlucky side. The one good thing about bad luck is that sooner or later its bound to change. And last Christmas my luck changed for the better.

I finally found a Grenada Car Rental company that delivered what they promised, and they did so with warm cheerful service that was not only fitting of the holiday season, but any season.

I did not want to deal with the hassle of renting another car in Grenada, but I had little choice. I was going to be in Grenada for almost a month, and for that length of time you just got to have your own wheels. So I did what I’ve always done: I asked friends for recommendations. And this time I hit the jackpot!

I was referred to J&B Auto Rentals, a small business ran by Joan and Briggs, a Husband and Wife team.

Joan the J in J&B Auto Rentals

Affordable Rates and Adequate Vehicle Availability

No sooner we pulled into the parking lot I knew this was going to be a different experience. The SUV’s are all in tip top condition,… a couple years old tops. No banged up jalopy here. And while their fleet is not massive, it was more than adequate for me to select a very nice Silver Honda CRV.

A few of J&B Auto Rentals' SUVs

I only saw 4×4s / SUVs in the parking lot – 2 door and 4 door - which are truly the best type of vehicle to use in Grenada. But I’ll bet they also have sedans and maybe even mini-vans if you need something bigger.

Their rates are affordable, and negotiable. In fact, my excellent Honda CRV from J&B Auto Rentals cost only a few dollars more per day than the Rundown, No AC, Broken Radio, Brakes Screeching, 2 door 4×4 that I received from another company a few years prior.

Closer View of the Honda CRV I rented from J&B Auto Rental

Excellent Service

Joan is a true professional. She’s been in the car rental business in Grenada for several years. When you deal with her you will see that her commitment to good service really shines through. In Grenada I like dealing directly with the owner, I’m more confident that my questions and concerns will be addressed immediately. And this was definitely the case dealing with J&B Auto Rentals.

The service was fast. We were done with all the details in about 10-15 minutes (including time for friendly chit-chat). Joan very clearly walked me through the terms and conditions, and the necessary paper work. I didn’t have to worry about things like the temporary Grenada Drivers License which is mandatory, she handled all of that for me.

They are also equipped to handle all mainstream forms of payment. I used my Credit Card for the transaction and it was only charged at the end of the rental period. I was given a hard copy receipt, and one was also emailed to me.

Going the Extra Mile

I had to call Joan twice to extend the car rental period, and on both occasions this was hassle free – Joan thanked me for the heads up and just agreed to workout the details when I returned the car.

When it was time to return the rental, they came to pick it up at my residence. That was early afternoon, and when Joan found out that I was flying out early the next morning, she insisted that I keep the car, and turn it in at the Airport. A generous offer that I would have accepted had my plans been different.

Off course next time I will just arrange to do an airport pick-up and drop off. Or maybe I’ll have them drop it off for me at my residence. It’s great to have options. You can’t beat that for service, especially when it is accompanied by a warm voice and smile (something you don’t always get).

Two Thumbs Up for J&B Auto Rentals!!

It was really a pleasant experience dealing with J&B Auto Rentals, and I will certainly use them in the future. Give them a try next time you are traveling to Grenada and need to rent a car. And be sure to write to me and let me know how they treated you.

For your convenience here is a contact form to reach Joan and Briggs. Let them know what your needs are and I’m sure they will do their best to please you, just as they did for me.

Yes, I remember the Sandblast, and Grand Anse Beach, but my favorite beach was the BBC, as it was where we lived the building of the Airport.

I have many happy memories of the island. I was taken there as a child by my parents on the Geest Boats, Later in my 20’s I stayed at Westerhall Point with friends of my parents.

Most of all I enjoyed my time there in my 30’s when Grenada became my home for a few years, and I looked out every day across BBC Bay.
I swam with the shoals of fish, had BBQ’s on the beach and I walked there and talked there and sat and paddled and sunbathed and laughed and lived on that beach.

One day I hope I will take my son ( now 21 ) back to see the island where his father and I were so happy (He sadly died when my son was just 7)

Thank-you to the lovely people of Grenada for making two Scots so welcome, and sharing your magnificent Island with us.

Pat

I am a Grenadian. I’ve been living in New York City for the past 15yrs, I had the pleasure to visit after staying away for such a long time.

When people say that you don’t realize you have a good thing until you lose it, well that saying was so true on my part. While I was residing in Grenada for 15yrs I never realized the beauty that it possessed.

The spectacular atmosphere

Astonishing beaches

Magnificent people

And most of all that secure and burden less feeling that consume your mind body and soul.

One thing that I mostly admired about Grenadians is the taking time to smell the roses, the friendliness of the people gives a sense of belong. I love the balance that goes with the every day process.

I loved going to the beach at night, the sound of the waves massages my soul, the beautiful sunset embraces my body as a silk blanket and the moon dances on the sand creating a magical silhouette.

Grenada is indeed a paradise. Whenever I feel like the world is bearing down on me, I close my eyes while I am transcended to this calm and beautiful Isle Of GRENADA.

People would think that I am being bias because I was born there, but the verdict of countless visitors put the icing on the cake.

House on Prickly Point

We work for Princess Cruises Corporate Headquarters in Los Angeles. Myself and one colleague were aboard the Caribbean Princess in November ‘08 to survey for an upcoming project.

Our work concluded, we disembarked in Grenada at 2pm for a flight back to L.A. the following morning. We gave our driver our cash on-hand to drive us around the Southern part of the island for a couple of hours. ($32 US and $8 BP= US$45).

He took us to the Grand Anse Beach, BBC Beach (Morne Rouge Beach), over to Woburn Bay to see Hog Island, and out to Westerhall Point. Some goats had gotten loose and were walking around in the street. Taking photos all the time he told me it had rained nearly 7 days straight, but today it was only overcast. It did rain a short while later that evening.

The last place he took us was the Grand Mal Bay area, and we saw Queen’s Park and the hillside cemetery where a funeral was underway. There must have been 400 locals out for it. Wish we had arrived earlier in the day so that we could have seen more (like the Annandale Waterfalls, the Northern Rainforest, and more), but it grew dark on us. We ended the drive back at our hotel, which was not on Hotel Row, but in the Lance Aux Epines area.

After a nice dinner at a nearby restaurant (including excellent Carib Beer!) we took a walk around the area where we encountered Calabash Trees (Crescentia cujete). We had to ask a local about it and they said that the fruit was not edible, but that locals had made bowls of the gourds forever.

Anyway, this brings me to the title of my post, “Running the Island”. Well, not the whole island, because that would take days. Rather, the South East end around Lance Aux Epines. I started out at 0630 and first ran up to Prickly Point, on the extreme South end of the island. Some very big homes out there, and some with unusual architecture. One looked like a light house, one a medieval castle, and another a Spanish hacienda.

I continued around Prickly Bay over to the beach area and turned around at BBC beach. About 2 hours later I ended up back at my hotel. A quick dip in the pool, an equally fast breakfast, and then the short drive to the airport, reviewing my photos as I we drove. Usually I don’t like to carry anything as I run, but I’m glad I took my digital camera with me this time…got lots of great photos.

I’d love to go back for a longer stay and enjoy the food, the beer, the friendly locals, and the scenery; rain or shine.

It was absolutely perfect. Not crowded, safe, and very nice people.

The beaches are not crowed, transportation was cheap, and the food out of this world. The thing that stood out to me most, was the “older” folks. This reminds me of what home is like.

We’ve gotten so far removed from some things that are good for our well being as Caribbean people; Grenada brought back a sense of nostalgia.

I forgot to mention it is also a very clean place without any traffic.

But since you probably won’t get a chance to try Moms Entrees, let’s talk about the next best place: Grenada Restaurants.

It’s no secret that Grenadians know good cooking. You will be hard pressed to find a Grenadian who doesn’t know their way around a kitchen. With such a demanding public to please you can bet that the food at all the Grenada Restaurants are a cut above good.

Here is a list of some of my favorite Grenada Restaurants. As I visit more of the top Grenada Restaurants this list will grow. And of course my comments about these Grenada Restaurants are a reflection of my taste and style.

Don’t agree with My List?

Think there’s a Grenada Restaurant missing that really ought to be on it?

How about your favorite entrees, deserts, best bites, etc. that everyone would want to know?

Then share it with us… scroll to the bottom or click here to skip down to the form

Best Grenada Restaurants

Aquarium Restaurant – arguably the best restaurant of all the Grenada Restaurants. Looking for a beautiful truly Caribbean beach and rain forest feel? Go to Aquarium restaurant to celebrate that special occasion, for it’s awesome Sunday beach barbecue, or for drinks at it’s Mediterranean bar. To top it off it’s right on one of the best Grenada Beaches

True Blue Restaurant and Dodgy Dock – One of the few Grenada Restaurants where you can satisfy your desire for Mexican Cuisine. And it’s the only Grenada Restaurant I know where you can eat there every night for a week and not get bored. It’s not just the Grenadian, Mexican, American cuisine, it’s also the Marina, the Music, the different nightly themes, and mix of diners

De Big Fish Restaurant – For the best darn Grilled Swordfish I ever had try this Grenada Restaurant. A casual open air atmosphere sitting on the quiet waters bay. Great place to catch up with friends and knock back a few Caribs… (If you know of a place that serves a better Grilled swordfish tell me below)

Red Crab Restaurant – Nothing extraordinary about this Grenada Restaurant. They have a great reputation… I’ve known about them since I was a kid, so they must be doing something right to be around for such a long time. Traditional menu of seafood, beef, chicken, etc and overly pricey.

Rick’s Cafe – hands down the best Ice Cream on the island, perfect place to stop off after a day on Grand Anse beach. They also serve pizza, barbecue, sandwiches, and beers. Some of the staff has been there for as long as I can remember maybe (15 or more years)

Le Chateau restaurant – Crab Back (think Crab Cakes served in the Carb’s back/shell), Callaloo and French Onion Soup, Seafood Kebab, Garlic and Creole Shrimp, are just some of the mouth watering treats you will find here. It’s in the heart of Grand Anse in Le Marquis Shopping Plaza

Bananas Restaurant – at this Grenada Hotspot you get more than just a restaurant. Include the lively bar and the famous night club it’s easy to see why many consider this Grenada’s premier hangout.

The Beach House Restaurant – great for a special occasion, it has a more upscale feel, the food is great, and the wait staff is friendly. Also check out the beach if it’s in the day.

BB’s Crabback Restaurant – A popular restaurant in the heart of St. George’s on the Carenage. Read about visitor’s rave review.

Kudos Bar & Grill – well I can’t vouch for the food here but what I can tell you is that they host one helluva Happy Hour.

Nutmeg Restaurant – A favorite among locals and visitors alike. This is one of the oldest Grenada restaurants. It’s located on the beautiful Carenage. Ask to be seated at or close to the window, for the great views of the inner harbor. Martha Stewart visited The Nutmeg on her Grenada trip. At one time they were famous for their “Chicken Snack” – Fried Chicken and Fries (chips) with coleslaw.

Laurena Hotel Restaurant – You will have to take a scenic trip up to beautiful Carriacou, in the Grenadines, the tase the delicious Red Snapper, or mouth watering Peas Soup that we had at this restaurant. Small and clean, with friendly staff it’s a great option when in Carriacou.

Restaurant at SGU Campus Grand Anse Beach – On the old St. George’s University(SGU) Campus on Grand Anse Beach there is a excellent restaurant that serves some really good Grenadian Cuisine. Nothing facny, just good food, that’s all.

Victory Bar and Grill – Lunch, afternoon snack, or drinks this great spot in the lovely Port Louis Marina can fit either occasion. We had drinks there and enjoyed it. Conveniently located between Grand Anse and St. George’s.

Creole Shak – also on the Carenage and very close to the Nutmeg restaurant. This is a cafeteria style operation that’s very popular among locals for lunch, but the line moves quickly. It’s a great place to sample many different Grenadian foods at a very reasonable price.

The biggest complain I get about Caribbean and Grenada Restaurants is that they can be too slow. At Creole Shak I was eating within 5 minutes of getting in line … not bad at all, considering the good quality and variety of food items offered. And most importantly the food was all delicious. On Friday and Saturday nights there’s also karaoke.

The Melting Pot Sports Bar & Grill – very similar to the Creole Shak. I think it’s under the same management. A great option if you are in the town of Grenville and craving some wholesome Grenadian food. The boasts French Creole Cuisine Grenadian style as their signature taste.

Gouyave Fish Friday – This one is NOT a Grenada Restaurant, but since we are talking about good places to eat, I thought we should throw it in. Gouyave Fish Fridays is an outdoor event, held every Friday in the coastal village of Gouyave.

It’s a Seafood lover dream come true. So if you are up to tasting the very best seafood Grenada has to offer, and you like hanging out with the local folks then check out Gouyave Fish Fridays.

And Now it’s your Turn…

As you can see there are tons of really good Grenada Restaurants and eateries missing from this list. The truth is I will never ever be able to try them all out.

First I’m just one guy who visits Grenada only twice a year for at most 2 weeks at a time

And second even when I’m in Grenada it’s tough to leave those home cooked Oil Down and Fish Broth that Moms and the boys prepare to go out to eat.

So that’s where you come in!

What was I missing that ten years I was away from my family, and my beautiful little island?

A WHOLE LOT.

But not anymore. Now I go to Carriacou every year, and its Soooo much fun. I go hang out at my old work place (Silver Beach Resort) where some of my old co-workers still work.

Last year, I was soo excited and anxious to take my husband, who is from Jamaica, to my beautiful, adorable island of Carriacou. I could not wait to take him to Hardwood Bar & Paradise Beach.

In fact, my grandma Estella lives only 2 minutes from the lower part of Paradise Beach.

What great fun he had. He couldn’t believe I came from such a people friendly island, and live so close to the beach. He loved paradise beach.

As I said my husband is from Jamaica, but now he is talking about building a house in Carriacou… EVEN I CAN’T BELIEVE IT.

I love this lovely place. CAN’T WAIT TO GO BACK.

“Every time I visit Grenada I fall deeper in love with “My Island Paradise”.

I visit the beach every day, soak up the sun and watch the stunning sunsets.

At night I gaze into the heavens and marvel at the stars.

I even run in the rain and feel like I’m 12 years old again.

I wasn’t not born in Grenada, but I spent 6 years on this beautiful island as a young child. I return for the first time at age 18 and several times since.

My most recent visit is the longest time I’ve spent on the island since my teenage years. I had a chance to explore the island, interact with the people and experience some of the many activities that Grenada has to offer.

Politics

My visit coincided with the height of election activities. I experienced the calm passion of the people as they debated politics on the beach and provided their opinions with humor on the radio.

Cricket

My visit also coincided with a West Indies v Australia cricket match. I ran into a group of Trinidadians on the beach discussing the lost cricket match and drinking Johnny Walker Black to drown their sorrows.

This was their first time in Grenada and they commented on how impressed they were with the island. The people are friendly, the island is clean and pristine, the Grenada beaches are beautiful.

Island Tour

I took a bus tour around the island and visited the waterfalls, the Grenada Cocoa Factory and Grand Etang Lake. It took me back to my childhood as I watched kids diving and playing is a river next to the cocoa factory.

Cccoa Tree

I re-learned how cocoa is processed … not much has changed in 30 years. I learned that Grenada now produces one of the best organic chocolate bars in the world.

I also toured the island by water on the Rhum Runner boat. They served the best rum punch and BBQ chicken.

We stopped at a secluded beach and took a swim. I learned that there are no private beaches in Grenada. Although there are many hotels and residences along the shores, all beaches must remain accessible to the public.

Night Club

One night, I visited Club Karma. Wow, I was truly impressed. It reminded me of a South Beach Miami club.

Plums & Mangoes

One more thing I must mention. My visit coincided with mango and plum season. It was about 20 years since I had a plum, so I went giddy. I had plums for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I also had my fair share of mangoes and returned to the US with a few stews.

Oh Why? Why? Why?…

As always, I left Grenada thinking “Why?”

Why would anyone want to leave this island paradise?

Why does my vacation have to end?

Why am I in America?

Update: Shortly after this post I learned that Kudos Bar and Grill is no longer in business. I will let you know if/when I hear anything new. At least we still have the dancing girls to remind us of the good times… see below.

What You Ought to Know About Kudos Bar & Grill

Kudos on a Friday throws a wicked Happy Hour. That’s what I heard, and that’s what I almost concluded. Read on and you will see why I say “almost”.

It was the second leg on our Friday evening/night hangout. First we hit Gouyave Fish Friday, then Kudos, followed by Club Karma… all in one night.

Looks like Kudos has developed somewhat of a reputation as the place to be on Friday evening for Happy Hour.

When we arrived at Kudos the Happy Hour was beginning to fizzle, but the energy level was still strong:

Drinks were flowing

Live band was jamming

The ladies were doing their thing outside on the patio.

Some of the guys were playing pool on the inside

And lots of conversations were abuzz around the bar

I can tell that we were catching the tail end of what was no doubt one very sweet session.

But we did not stay very long, after two rounds of drinks we bolted, and headed to Club Karma, it was already pass midnight. As they say it was short and sweet. And it’s only because I had a short stint at Kudos that Friday night that I am reluctant to put Kudos in the category of a “Wicked Happy Hour”.

But if the tail end is any indication of what I missed when things were in full swing, then the Kudos Happy Hour definitely deserves to be in this category. Come judge for yourself.

I will definitely check them out next time I am in Grenada, and this time I intend to catch the full happy hour. But if you happen to beat me to it, then click here to tell me what you liked best about this Grenada Happy Hour.

Here are some pics from the Kudos Happy Hour

The dance floor was rocking

Hey Neville,
Can’t remember if I got back to you or not about our experience in Grenada, maybe because I just had a few shots of that Rivers Rum last night. It’s the real deal!

Well, without a lengthy specific explanation describing the beauty of the island, and the warmth of the people, I’ll briefly sum it up
this way.

Over the last decade, my wife and I have visited virtually every island in the Caribbean, except Turks and Caicos, St Vincent and Trinidad.

Of all the islands we have visited in the Caribbean, Grenada is without a doubt the BEST!

We loved it so much we just booked again for 8 days in April. This time we’ll make it to Gouyave Fish Friday for sure!

Best Wishes,
Jeff

Enjoying Mahi Mahi with friends at True Blue Restaurant

True Blue Bay provides the elegant “touristy” environment for folks from the metropolitan world and also the “back home” allure for Caribbean natives. It is, in a nutshell, the essence of paradise. I enjoyed a leisurely luncheon in the True Blue Bay Restaurant along with some friends on a balmy Friday afternoon. Arriving after 1:30, we occupied one of the 20+ empty tables and shared the patio dining area with only eight other diners as we overlooked the water and the picturesque hills in the distance.

The food options were varied with a discernible bias towards fish and seafood. We all selected fish (the catch of the day was either king fish or Mahi Mahi), and our table chose broiled over the other options of fried or grilled.

My broiled fish was excellent! It was delicately spiced with a butter sauce and served with rice and local vegetable. The service was efficient; and the prices were reasonable. Lunch and cocktail beverages for four cost approximately $55 US.

The gentle breeze from the sea lent a tranquil effervescence to the atmosphere, and the gentle splash of the waves reinforced the aura of paradise. The experience was truly Grenada at its natural best. My only problem was the nuisance of some pesky birds…but for most normal folks that would be an environmental enhancement…but I hate birds!

Martin and I met through the Grenada-Beaches website in the weeks leading up to his Grenada travel.

He and his family were some of the many South African fans who came to Grenada for the Cricket World Cup.

Pictured to the left is Martin at the Grenada National Stadium at the South African versus West Indies Match.

South Africa did well in Grenada, and Martin and family did even better. They had a blast!

Here’s what Martin said about his favorite places and things to do in Grenada:

Hello Neville

Thanks for the email. We had an awesome holiday in Grenada. My family particularly enjoyed the hotel we stayed in Mi Hacienda, high over Grand Anse beach near the golf club.

We also enjoyed our day trips, especially the ferry to Carriacou and the beach bbq. Our favorite restaurant by far was Aquarium.

A week is too little to see the whole island. Missed fish Friday but got to see Short Shirt and Gabby performing instead. They were also staying at our hotel. Please find some photos on the following link:

(Neville’s Note: I’ve selected some photos from the link Martin sent me. See them below. Oh, and I’ll definitely check out the Beach BBQ at Aquarium next time I’m home … Now back to Martin)

Downside was we thought accommodation a bit pricey, renting a serviced apartment in Venice was about half the cost (500 pounds v 1000 pounds). Seems like there’s a US dollar price for tourists and a local EC price for everyone else. Got to find a beach house away from St Georges on a bus route…

Straight ahead mon!

Martin Battaliou

(Neville’s Note: Martin you are sure right, the major hotels in the Grand Anse area can be pricey especially in peak season. The World Cup Cricket was Grenada’s biggest event ever, so I am sure the laws of demand and supply took over and made things much more pricey. Feel free to venture outside to the touristy areas to find better deals next time … Grenada is very safe and friendly.)

Here is the entire Battaliou gang: little Johnathan, wife Roz, Martin and older son Joshua.

Joshua and Jonathan with new found friends in the hotel pool

Roz and Martin on route to Carriacou aboard Osprey Ferry

Now that’s what paradise is all about. Just think of this when you want to relax

The local mini buses are great and cheap way to get around Grenada. Here is Martin on a bus ride through River Road headed to St George’s. The background music is actually playing in the bus, and is by popular Grenada Soca artist Tallpree. You will notice Martin in the front window seat recording. According to him: It [this video] always brings a smile to my face.
