Perfect atmosphere for Grenada Sailing, both for spectators and would be sailors.

From my verandah ( patio) I can see dozens of yachts emerging from the inner harbor … another Grenada Sailing event is on underway …

Sailing is fantastic in Grenada and neighboring islands. You can head south towards Tobago and on to the Dutch Antilles (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao), or you can head up North through the gorgeous Grenadines. Or just Grenada Sailing itself around the island has much to offer.

Regattas (yacht races) in these parts are looked forward to with much anticipation. All are welcome to participate … from rookie sailor to season sailor … if you don’t own a yacht then charter one …

And as if the sailing wasn’t exhilarating enough, be prepared to have a blast at the after parties. There’s endless food, drink and entertainment.

There are about five major Regattas in Grenada and nearby Tobago and Carriacou.

Grenada Round-the-Island Easter Regatta – Easter Weekend

Angostura Tobago Sail Week – May in Tobago

Grenada Yacht Club Summer Regatta – July

Carriacou Regatta Festival – Late July – early August is a perfect primer for the Grenada carnival festivities

If your vacation happens to coincide with any of these Grenada sailing events, they are sure to add another dimension to your fun.

Oh, speaking of Tobago, that gem of an island south east of Grenada, check out these sailing tips from our friends at myTobago. Tobago and Grenada, it’s hard to love one and not the other … they are so alike.

Your own Charter …

If you prefer to be sailing, instead of watching, then you can charter a yacht and enjoy private sailing to the destination of your choice. Popular choices are around Grenada or up the Grenadines.

Here are two charter companies that you can contact for more details. These suggestions are provided as a starting point for you to investigate further. If you do use any one, please tell me about your experience so I can post it for others benefit.

What on earth does cricket have to do with Grenada Sailing? Not a darn thing. Except it was at a World Cup Cricket match that I had the good fortune of running into Jacqui.

I know, I know you can say it … who the hell is Jacqui, and what does she have to do with Grenada Sailing?

Great question. As you are about to find out Jacqui knows the subject of Grenada Sailing inside out. And lucky for you she does because other than tagging along on my friends sail boat couple times back in high school, I honestly won’t have a clue where to begin.

Back to that cricket match: We were both already pass a few drinks when we met, so conversation flowed as freely as rum leaving the bottle. In the end I decided it would be much more fun and interesting if Jacqui gave you the low-down on Grenada Sailing.

So from here on out here is why Jacqui thinks Grenada Sailing is among the best the Carri bean has to offer:

Why Sail Grenada?

Grenada and the sister islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique are a sailors dream of paradise, white sandy beaches, safe anchorages and friendly seafaring people. The sailing area is the southern Windward Islands (St Vincent and the Grenadines through to Grenada) and with constant trade winds blowing there is ample opportunity for ideal conditions.

The lush tropical mountains with abundant waterfalls create a dramatic back drop to the anchorage around the Grenada. Known as the Spice Island, Grenada has so much to offer to the sailors who visit that they often come back year after year.

The south coast is the most popular Grenada Sailing area with splendid anchorages that include True Blue Bay, Prickly Bay, Mount Hartman and Hog Island. Further eastward St. David’s Harbour with the haul out facility is very popular with cruising folk these days.

Grenada Sailing Gateway

As the gateway to the Grenadines the Point Salines international airport is modern and efficient. With daily flights to Puerto Rico for the USA and London’s Gatwick and weekly connections to Frankfurt, Germany the airport serves a fast growing clientele of adventurous travelers. Regular flights to Carriacou and Union Island enable you to get into the heart of the Grenadines very easily.

Friendly Atmosphere

The friendly nature of the Grenadian people is well known. Wherever you go ashore you can expect to make friends very quickly. Take the time to chat with the people that you meet, find out about the history of the islands, everyone knows everyone and if there is something you are particularly interested in, just mention this and listen to the story unfold.

Attractions and Activities – Dive, Snorkel, Hike

The waters team with life, dolphins, whales and huge fish play beneath your boat, pull on your snorkel gear and drop over the side to see an array of wonderful aquatic life. The rocks off the west coast of Carriacou, the Sisters offer amazing diving opportunities. With a strong current the best drift dives in the region.

And for those who love to explore inland there is so much to see. The Grand Etang National Park offers great hiking trails with the Seven Sisters Waterfall within easy walking distance. For the more adventurous an amazing hike from Grand Etang over Mount Qua Qua down to the Concord Falls is most satisfying, but make sure you have the right walking gear as it is very steep!

Jacqui and I meet at the recent World Cup Cricket 2007 games at the newly built Grenada National Stadium in Queen’s Park, St. George’s.

What a day it was! Spirits (read rum) were high in the Party Stands as New Zealand won the match against South Africa.

Jacqui was photographed hugging Mello the World Cup Cricket mascot (above).

Been There, Done That

Having lived and worked in Grenada for the past nine years, Jacqui is very much at home living in the islands as she was prior to this living onboard yachts. She started sailing in her early twenties firstly onboard the 120′ square rigged replica of Sir Francis Drakes Golden Hinde (pictured right).

Crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean was a dream come true and the crew eventually delivered this museum ship to the World Expo in Vancouver in 1986. Make sure and ask Jacqui about that trans Atlantic voyage.

Jacqui has since then been involved in the yacht charter business, and she went on to crew on a number of luxury yachts in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Australian waters. After this she worked as a yacht broker in the UK.

Horizon Yacht – In Business, In Love

Returning to the Caribbean, she met her future husband James and they have established their own bareboat yacht charter company. Based at True Blue Bay Resort & Marina, Horizon Yacht Charters has grown from strength to strength over the seven years of operation.

With a dedicated team of Grenadian staff who ensure that all the fleet are highly maintained and customer service levels are excellent, this company has built a strong reputation in the industry.

Community – Giving Back

Her passion for sailing has been passed along to the young sailors in Grenada who attend the junior sailing program that Jacqui supports.

Through her commitment to the Grenada Sailing Association she has been able to encourage local events where racing in traditional wooden sailing sloops continues, especially during the annual holidays.

Jacqui feels very positive about the future of sailing in Grenada and the delightful waters of the Grenadines.

Though good practice and behavior is vital to ensure the longevity of the reefs and bays for all to enjoy she believes the island and her people will benefit immensely from yachting development with opportunities for all to enjoy.
