One of the things I enjoy at Annandale Waterfalls is the jumpers. Here are some pictures and a video of an Annandale Jumper doing his thing. This is risky business… it rained quite heavily that day. And as if the rain, and slippery stones weren’t enough, it was clear to us that this guy already had a few drinks that morning.

Friends And A Cold Carib In Grenada: The Perfect Vacation

I had the pleasure of traveling to Grenada, for the first time, in July of 2008. My fiancee is from Grenada and I wanted, not only to go on a little vacation, but mainly, to meet her family.

I was truly amazed to see how warm and welcoming Grenadians were on a whole. In most territories, a stranger in town is, well, treated like a stranger, but in Grenada, it’s quite the reverse.

I had heard so much about the Fish Fry at Gouyave (I tuned in to Wee Fm everyday. Sorry, but I had to get a head start on my bearings), and when I finally got there, it was everything that I had expected to be. Once again, in this beautiful, street-fair setting, Grenadian hospitality took center stage. Everyone there was so kind and welcoming: from the ladies on the corner, selling little portraits of a woman dressed in Grenadian clothes, to the guy on the other side, who was preparing what seemed to be an oriental dish. Isn’t that something? (Smile)

The Island is beautiful, nature preserved in it’s purest form. I enjoyed driving from Grenville to St. Georges, via the rain forest (after I got accustomed to the narrow and winding roads, of course). This was too funny: when returning to Grenville from St. Georges, I would always get lost on that road that lead to the Annandale Waterfalls. That junction could be a little tricky, I’m sure most of you would agree. Especially if you have a tour-guide fiancee that goes to sleep and tells you that the way home is simply to stay on the straight road. Wow, some experience that was: we spent more time getting back on track, than actually going home.

Hello! Do I need to mention Club Karma? This club is a state of the art facility that no other in the world can look down upon. I really enjoyed the show that included Ajamu, Tall Pree and the great Doctor Sparrow. I certainly cannot leave out the Heat Wave band,as they were the ones that held everything together with their sugary notes. I also met Jon, I believe he manages the place. For a guy who runs such a top notch facility, he is so down to earth.

I was only able to spend a little over a week in Grenada, and there is just so little you could do in a week. That’s why I’m already planning my return trip to Grenada. If all goes well, I’ll be taking advantage of your hospitality, once again, from December 22nd.

Granda Etang National Park & Forest Reserve

My fascination with Grand Etang started as a young boy. Back when Grenada’s airport was to in North East we passed through Grand Etang going to and coming from Pearls Airport.

I grew up on the coast, so it always intrigued me that only about 20 minutes from the beach front can be so different– misty and cold (by island standards). So cold that my friends and I argued over whether or not apple trees will thrive in Grand Etang (we loved apples).

On our return from the airport I always tried to convince everyone for us to visit Grand Etang Lake. The lake was once an active volcano. It now serves as one of the main water sources for the island. It is surrounded by an abundance of green as far as the eye can see.

Around the lake are many hiking trails… some easy, some a little more challenging. I once followed a trail to the top of Mt. St. Catherine, the highest point on the island. Use Grand Etang area as a good starting point for some of your hikes.

Monkey See Monkey Do …
You don’t have to be lucky to run across a Monkey or Two at Grand Etang… the Mona Monkey is fun to watch. It was introduced to Grenada from Africa. If you run into one you will understand what the phrase Monkeying Around means. These guys have no qualms about stealing your belongings if left unattended… so be on the look out for them.

Waterfalls …

Grenada has many waterfalls, some more accessible than others. The first one I ever visited was Annandale waterfalls on a school excursion, and it is probably the most popular because of its accessibility of all Grenada waterfalls. No hiking required here. If you are lucky you might get to see the local guys perform some dare devil diving… it’s quite entertaining.

The lower Concord Waterfalls is also easily accessible… if you are headed up the west coast to the town of Gouyave, or Bathway beach do check it out. Here are some other waterfalls to check out, some will require a little treking and dirty boots but well worth it:

• Seven Sister Waterfalls
• Concord Waterfalls ( Au Coin and Fontainbleu)
• Mt. Carmel Falls (Marquis Falls)

The waterfalls are not high, and monstrous as those you may have seen elsewhere … that makes them very safe for swimming, and many visitors and locals alike take advantage of this.

Levera Here I come …

You won’t believe how many times I’ve said that, … but the truth is that up until recently I’d never quite made it Levera. I always got trapped at Bathway Beach-after a few Rum and Coke, Levera though quite close became a distant memory.

But determined as I was I finally made it to Levera-just had to leave the rum and coke for after. Levera is a fabulous destination, with a sandy white coast line with views of nearby islands including Carriacou on a clear day. It’s a sanctuary for lobsters, turtles hatching, and other marine life. You can also enjoy the lagoon and its many species of birds.

Snorkeling is excellent, but the currents in the north can be significant, so unless you are an expert, you should pass on this one. Always seek the advice of locals about any beaches in the north of the island, before you venture out on your own.

Getting to these sites …

If you have a Car Rental then all you need is a Grenada Map and you are good to go. What the map leaves out the locals will gladly fill in for you.

If you are not feeling that adventurous then you can go with one of the Grenada Tour companies like Sunshine Tours. We used them for an island and was very pleased.

Our visit to Annandale Waterfalls was short, but it stands out as one of my most memorable stops. 

Grenada tourist attractions like Annandale Falls can get crowded when the cruise ships are in port. So I try to avoid visits on those days. As my luck will have it there were at least three cruise ships in port the morning I had schedule to visit Annadale Waterfalls.

To go or not to go, that was the question. Well you already know that answer: I decided to go …and am glad I did.

The very thing that I was trying to avoid: many tourists, is the very thing that made Annandale Waterfalls so special, on that day. 

Here’s why? You see where there are tourist, the vendors, the show men, even the monkeys, and all forms of entertainment are sure to follow. And Annandale Waterfalls on a cruise ship day has its own special cast of local characters to entertain you.

Now let’s dive a little deeper into Annadale Falls and meet some of the cast that make this Grenada attraction a must visit.

Act #1 – Bananas in the Balance

The first to hook my attention were the colorfully dressed ladies with what looked like elaborate head pieces.

On closer inspection I realized they were actually balancing on their heads an array of tropical fruits.

One woman had an oversize basket of cocoa, decorated with purple bougainvillea (the national flower). The other an entire bunch of green bananas.

It is a portrayal of how ladies carried the bananas from the plantation in colonial times. And an exhibition of local Grenada fruits. It takes amazing skill just to stand and balance an entire bunch of bananas on your head. Can you imagine carrying it for long distances over winding, bumpy tracks?

Do get a picture with the lovely ladies, and don’t forger to give small tip … see the pouches/purses strapped around their waist? Well it’s not there for decoration

Act #2 – The Guitar Man

At Annandale Waterfalls the good times is accompanied by music. Next up was the Guitar Man …

This guy is full of energy, and extremely talented. He is great at composing and singing humorous lyrics off the cuff.  

In Grenada we call it Extempore Singing and there’s even local competitions from time to time … but thats another story.

This Annandale Falls Guitar man if he spots you will without request sing a verse or two about you, or your lady friend. He had everyone cracking up, and some of the ladies blushing.

Act #3 The Monkey and The Man

Look for this guy with his pet monkey. He does have the monkey on a leash but do keep your close eye on him (the monkey). Like all Mona Monkeys they are very tricky, and might snatch away your belongings from you.

Act #4 – Annandale Dare Devil Divers

I saved the best Act for last, and The Annandale Waterfalls Divers is a class act.

As we moved closer down the hill I noticed several local guys sporting red shorts and tops … it did not take me long to figure out who they were and why they were there.

Two decades before I saw someone leap off the top of Annandale Waterfalls. And from the looks of things, I was going to get lucky again. 

This is no easy feat. The falls is not extremely high, but its high enough to do you some serious damage if you don’t know what you are doing.

Also as one of the divers told us, what you can’t see can also kill you. The pool has boulders beneath the water that are not visible from above. Plunging in the wrong spot, can leave a diver hospitalized or dead, and this has happened in the past.

Local Crafts and Souvenirs

After taking many photos we headed back towards the car. Along the way we passed vendors with handicrafts, and other items that will make great gifts.

Try a Cold Coconut

If you are thirsty … check out the guys selling the cold coconuts, it’s very refreshing and all natural. And after you quench your thirst or curiosity, have them split the coconut shell in half with the machete. In there you will find the sweet white coconut jelly, my favorite part of the coconut … just give it a try.

We left Annandale Waterfalls on a high. This is definitely a fun place to visit, even without all the extras. Just the waterfalls by itself is gorgeous. If you want more privacy, or something more on the romantic side, then go on a late afternoon when there are no cruise ships. But I highly recommend visiting Annandale Waterfalls when all the acts are on display.
