Are you planning to travel to Grenada end of May? If yes, then you are in for a pleasant surprise. If No, then maybe you should seriously consider it.

Why?

A ton of Grenada’s Culture will be on showcase, along with Superstar artists like Shaggy and Third World.

Rock d Spice is the first major festival to be introduced in Grenada over seven years. It will be staged from May 29th to 31st. This event is geared towards giving locals as well as visitors a varied experience of Grenada’s Culture, Music, Art, and Craft, at different venues throughout the Island.

Here’s the Line Up

FRIDAY MAY 29th – Opening Night

The Celebration will take visitors to the opening night at the Cuthbert Peters Park in Gouyave, where there will be a fusion of food, local arts and craft market, and an explosion of music from Grenada’s most celebrated artiste King Ajamu.

There will also be other top local artistes accompanied by HEATWAVE, including Tivoli Drummers, Steel band and other performers. Patrons on the opening night will be treated to an awesome fireworks display. The event runs from 6pm-1am and is FREE to the general public.

SATURDAY MAY 30th – The Concert

On Saturday May 30th the spotlight will be on The National Stadium – this promises to be a colossal night of entertainment featuring Grammy Award superstar SHAGGY, the #1 Caribbean Female Soca Icon – Destra & her Band, Rayvon, Rick Rock, Tivoli Drummers, Mr. Killa, Brother B and more. The event runs from 9pm – 3am.

SUNDAY MAY 31ST – Reggae on the Beach

On day three the attention will shift to the northern part of the island where Bathway beach will be transformed into a Reggae village for REGGAE ON THE BEACH – featuring the legendary reggae band THIRD WORLD.

They will be joined by top local gospel and R&B acts, local reggae artistes, and others. As part of the package patrons will be treated to a Beach Fashion show featuring locally produced designer clothing; there will also be Bouncing Castles, Rides, Face painting, a Games area, Food, and a local Arts &Craft Market.

Here is another Grenada Beach that very few know about. This is the first time this beach has ever been featured on Grenada Beaches website and we have Louise Francois from London to thank for that. Thanks Louise.

Secret Sea Front

You are at River Salle, St. Patrick’s going to Bathway Beach. From River Salle Roundabout take the Bathway exit. A few yards on you will meet the cemetery, turn right at the cemetery towards River Sallee school adjacent (lying near) to the cemetery.

Stay on that road and drive pass the school. Do not turn left or right. Remember – its a straight drive ahead until you reach a steep hill – go over the hill. Turn not left nor right but simply go straight over the hill. From there you will see a stunning cream and red country villa, drive towards it.

Once you have arrived at it’s gated garden with assorted plants and flowers, keep you eyes upfront. In the distance, you will see a glistening blue sea welcoming you. If you go a few yards on you may park the jeep at the entrance of the rocky grass road, flanked by coconut grove, mango, sapadollia trees; shrubs and butterflies of all kinds .

It’s a refreshing and pleasant walk down to where you will discover this wild and amazing sea front.
Oops, mind the cows.
Forgot – there’s an estuary, it’s Glassie, that’ the name.

Have a lovely, whatever it is you wish to do – fish, walk or otherwise. If lost, ask a local to show you Liva Calbash – if you have to then you are lost.

Grenada National Parks…Hike Ho! Hike Ho! Off To Hike We Go…

If you are planning to get a little mud on you boots while in Grenada then the Grenada Nationa Parks is the place to do it.

Photography: Muddy Shoes by rightee.

Granda Etang National Park & Forest Reserve

My fascination with Grand Etang started as a young boy. Back when Grenada’s airport was to in North East we passed through Grand Etang going to and coming from Pearls Airport.

I grew up on the coast, so it always intrigued me that only about 20 minutes from the beach front can be so different– misty and cold (by island standards). So cold that my friends and I argued over whether or not apple trees will thrive in Grand Etang (we loved apples).

On our return from the airport I always tried to convince everyone for us to visit Grand Etang Lake. The lake was once an active volcano. It now serves as one of the main water sources for the island. It is surrounded by an abundance of green as far as the eye can see.

Around the lake are many hiking trails… some easy, some a little more challenging. I once followed a trail to the top of Mt. St. Catherine, the highest point on the island. Use Grand Etang area as a good starting point for some of your hikes.

Monkey See Monkey Do …
You don’t have to be lucky to run across a Monkey or Two at Grand Etang… the Mona Monkey is fun to watch. It was introduced to Grenada from Africa. If you run into one you will understand what the phrase Monkeying Around means. These guys have no qualms about stealing your belongings if left unattended… so be on the look out for them.

Waterfalls …

Grenada has many waterfalls, some more accessible than others. The first one I ever visited was Annandale waterfalls on a school excursion, and it is probably the most popular because of its accessibility of all Grenada waterfalls. No hiking required here. If you are lucky you might get to see the local guys perform some dare devil diving… it’s quite entertaining.

The lower Concord Waterfalls is also easily accessible… if you are headed up the west coast to the town of Gouyave, or Bathway beach do check it out. Here are some other waterfalls to check out, some will require a little treking and dirty boots but well worth it:

Seven Sister Waterfalls

Concord Waterfalls ( Au Coin and Fontainbleu)

Mt. Carmel Falls (Marquis Falls)

The waterfalls are not high, and monstrous as those you may have seen elsewhere … that makes them very safe for swimming, and many visitors and locals alike take advantage of this.

Levera Here I come …

You won’t believe how many times I’ve said that, … but the truth is that up until recently I’d never quite made it Levera. I always got trapped at Bathway Beach-after a few Rum and Coke, Levera though quite close became a distant memory.

But determined as I was I finally made it to Levera-just had to leave the rum and coke for after. Levera is a fabulous destination, with a sandy white coast line with views of nearby islands including Carriacou on a clear day. It’s a sanctuary for lobsters, turtles hatching, and other marine life. You can also enjoy the lagoon and its many species of birds.

Snorkeling is excellent, but the currents in the north can be significant, so unless you are an expert, you should pass on this one. Always seek the advice of locals about any beaches in the north of the island, before you venture out on your own.

Getting to these sites …

If you have a Car Rental then all you need is a Grenada Map and you are good to go. What the map leaves out the locals will gladly fill in for you.

If you are not feeling that adventurous then you can go with one of the Grenada Tour companies like Sunshine Tours. We used them for an island and was very pleased.

Good Luck and happy exploring!!!

There are about 45 Grenada Beaches to choose from. Yes, you heard me right: 45 Grenada Beaches. Well … that sounds great, but to be honest it’s more beach than you, and I have the time, or energy to handle.

So how about a more manageable list? How about a Top Grenada Beaches list, so you can cut to the chase? Read on …

My Top 6 Grenada Beaches

Okay so let’s cut it down from 45 Grenada Beaches to the top 6 Grenada Beaches. We’re not throwing the other 39 beaches away, only putting them on reserve for you. If you ever get the urge to explore further, they’re all your’s for your enjoyment.

So let’s get to it, here are my top picks for the best Grenada Beaches

1. Grand Anse Beach

You will be hard pressed to find a more spectacular beach anywhere in the world, no kidding … and am not biased, that’s according to the many travel writers and visitors that swim, stroll, and soak up the sun, on this beach each and every year.

Click here to see why Grand Anse Beach of all Grenada Beaches is my absolute favorite …

2. Morne Rouge Beach (BBC Beach)

Most locals refer to this one as BBC beach, am sure there is a story behind the name but I never bothered to inquire. Probably got the name from the BBC night club that once operated on the beach.

Morne Rouge Beach like Grand Anse beach lies in the heart of the hotel district, in the south of Grenada.

Holidays aside, this is one beach you can have all to yourself. It’s an interesting contrast of Lush green trees, white sands, and calm turquoise waters. When am looking for a more peaceful relaxing day I will choose Morne Rouge on a weekday.

And if you have small children, then this beach is probably one of your safest choices among all the Grenada Beaches. Morne Rouge Bay is sheltered, so the waves are often quite calm.

3. Magazine Beach

Another beautiful beach on Grenada’s Southwestern coast.

Magazine Beach, is is the home of the Rex Grenadian Hotel and the Aquarium Restaurant. The beach is about one mile of white sand, and clear blue waters.

Great food and drinks from Aquarium Restaurant, kayaking, and snorkeling all accentuate a fun day on this Grenada beach. Find out why Sunday is one of the best days to spend on this beach.

4. Pink Gin Beach

This one lies almost at the very tip of the island, behind the hill overlooking Point Salines International Airport.

Pink Gin Beach, is even more secluded than Morne Rouge Beach. Pinkish sand, pristine waters and a picturesque view of St. George welcomes you at Pink Gin Beach.

Add to that, the convenience of the La Source Hotel, the opportunity for all sorts of water sports; or just chill out and relax; and it’s easy to see why Pink Gin Beach is a top favorite.

5. Bathway Beach

A beautiful strip of white sand beach in the north of the island.

If you are looking for action … people, food, drinks, and just good times then Bathway beach on a Grenada holiday is the one place to be.

Of course like most Grenada beaches, during the weekdays and even on weekends you will feel like this long strip of sand is all yours. But before you take the plunge at Bathway beach be sure to read this …

When you’re at Bathway you get a bonus!! Only a couple minutes away is another one of Grenada’s very special spots.

6. La Sagesse Beach

Any list of the top Grenada Beaches won’t be complete withoutan option for the romantic birds.

If you want quiet time with that special someone, then La Sagesse can be your beach. Most people come here when they do not want to be seen, or disturbed.

It’s an absolute gem, off the beaten path, with a good seafood restaurant and guest house at the main entrance. Click Here to find out more about this secluded spot

Bathway Beach Grenada

On national holidays Bathway Beach is by far be the most festive of all Grenada beaches. Food, drinks, music, and lots of people. If you happen to be in Grenada on a national holiday and you are up to it, then pack the cooler and head north for a day of fun and frolic.

But national holidays aside, you will find bathway beach just the way we found it, when we stopped while on our island tour … almost deserted.

There are no water sports, or dive shops on Bathway. So bring along your own fun. If your idea of fun isjust a relaxing day on the sand, reading a book, and taking a swim … you will feel right at home.

There are normally a couple vendors selling light refresments. But I will highly reccommend that youalso bring along a cooler, and snacks.
The perfect day trip will be to first stop off at Morne Fendue Plantation House for lunch. And then head down to bathway beach.

Warning!!!

Be extra careful swimming on this beach. Under no circumstance should you go beyond the protective reef. There are very strong currents beyond these reefs … even expert local swimmers do not venture beyond them.

In fact the best thing to do is seek advice from one of the local vendors on which areas are the safestto swim … most of them will tell you the same thing Swim in front of the reefs, but actually hearing it again can be reassuring.
