Unwind Bar @ BBC Beach, the Secret is Out.

I knew I struck gold when I discovered Unwind Bar at BBC Beach. It was sheer coincidence that I happen to be at the right place at the right time. But that’s another story.

My guess is that you have never heard about Unwind Bar. Even my friend, a frequent Grenada visitor whose favorite beach is BBC Beach knew nothing about it.

You know what? ~~Right this second I’m having second thoughts telling you about Unwind Bar… maybe I should just keep it a secret.~~ Okay, okay that was my selfish streak imposing itself again… let’s just ignore it.

Yes, as I was saying, Unwind Bar at BBC Beach, also known as Morne Rouge Beach was a golden find…

3 things I really like about Unwind Bar

First, it’s on BBC Beach. Unarguably one of Grenada’s best beaches.

Second, the owners Rocky and his lovely wife are utterly fantastic folks (and good cooks). Their gracious hospitality shines through.

Third, the place is just Nice. Real Nice. And different. The name Unwind was a brilliant choice, because as soon as you arrive that’s exactly what you want to do,… leave your worries at the door, have a drink, chill out and unwind.

That’s how I felt on my first visit to Unwind Bar. I was hung over from a party at Club Karma the night before. When I got to Unwind I just sprawled off on a beach chair, under the coconut and tamarind trees; closed my eyes; and listened to the waves. Oh yeah, I also ordered a drink (gotta fight fire with fire… ) … okay just kidding, the only drink I had was Rocky’s formula for hangover –Angostura Bitters and Club Soda. And It Worked!!

Two Drawbacks

Unwind Bar is not open every day of the week. They open on most weekends, some holidays, and on days when they are catering for tour groups. So please call (437-407-0906) before you go, that way you can also make arrangements for lunch (try the Grilled Mahi Mahi with rice or the Pork Barbecue).

Taking size into consideration the volume of people that visit BBC beach each day is less than Grand Anse beach (Maybe that explains why Unwind Bar is not open everyday).

The reason is simply because Grand Anse beach runs alongside the main road, and is therefore easily accessible to those without a car. To get to BBC Beach without a car, it’s at least 25 minutes walk (both ways), with a hill to consider.

I translate all that to mean more space, and less disturbances on BBC Beach, which for me is a plus. So to some this is a deterrent, to others like me it’s a big plus.

Getting to Unwind Bar at BBC Beach

From Grand Anse Round About (Wall Street):
Follow the street that leads to Spiceland Mal, KFC, Coyaba, Spice Island Resort, etc. Go all the way to the end, turn left (passing at the police station). At the stop sign make a right turn onto the Morne Rouge road. Continue along this road passing the (Mount Cinnamon and Flamboyant hotels). Arriving at the intersection at the top of hill, turn left and then make a right at the 3rd driveway down towards the beach (Morne Rouge Bay commonly called BBC beach).

Already on BBC Beach:
There is only one public access to the beach which located at the extreme right end of Unwind Bar. Once at the beach walk towards the opposite end. Unwind Bar is located exactly center of the beach.

I went back to Unwind bar on two other occasions before I left Grenada. And I intend to make it a regular spot on future Grenada Vacations. Next time you are in Grenada give them a call (473-407-0906), and go have some good Grenadian food and drinks, in a lovely atmosphere, on one of Grenada’s best beaches

Yes, I remember the Sandblast, and Grand Anse Beach, but my favorite beach was the BBC, as it was where we lived the building of the Airport.

I have many happy memories of the island. I was taken there as a child by my parents on the Geest Boats, Later in my 20′s I stayed at Westerhall Point with friends of my parents.

Most of all I enjoyed my time there in my 30′s when Grenada became my home for a few years, and I looked out every day across BBC Bay.
I swam with the shoals of fish, had BBQ’s on the beach and I walked there and talked there and sat and paddled and sunbathed and laughed and lived on that beach.

One day I hope I will take my son ( now 21 ) back to see the island where his father and I were so happy (He sadly died when my son was just 7)

Thank-you to the lovely people of Grenada for making two Scots so welcome, and sharing your magnificent Island with us.

Sur La Mer Restaurant

Ah ha. If you are looking to find a snack while partying at the nearby Fantasia Night Club, or just looking to find a midday or evening meal, Sur La Mer Restaurant is there to meet your needs.

Conveniently located adjoining the Fantasia Nightclub, Sur La Med Restaurant is lovely and affordable (although a bit pricier than some of the other local hot spots).

With a menu as diverse as the resources of Grenada, this classy, beachfront, restaurant offers a significant blend of exotic, and local meals that will satisfy any palate.

Indeed, the price matches the efficiency of the staff and the tastiness of the dishes.
One can find the everyday “chicken snack” or Roti, as well as Lambie (conch) and other seafood dishes that are the quintessential Grenadian culinary experiences.

If you are partying at Fantasia and just need to soothe that hunger, or if you are just trying to find a nice, quiet Grenadian restaurant, with a beachfront view, tasty dishes and a complementary bar, drop by Sur La Mer Restaurant.

It is , as the name suggests, a local, but very chic venue, to meet your palatable needs.

Morne Rouge Beach, The Best Grenada Beach?

Is Morne Rouge Beach the Best Grenada Beach? I certainly don’t think so. My favorite is Grand Anse Beach. But Many visitors prefer the tranquil turquoise waters, white sand, and natural setting that defines Morne Rouge Beach over all other Grenada Beaches.

Morne Rouge Beach, also know as BBC Beach used to be one of the most popular beaches with locals, especially on public holidays. Today it’s still very well know and always gets the thumbs up, but it plays second fiddle to Bathway Beach, on Grenada holidays.

of course this can be a big plus in your favor if you are looking for a more quiet relaxing beach experience.

Have kids? Then Morne Rouge might definitely be a safer choice over Grand Anse Beach. Tucked away in a bay, this beach is normally quite clam, and great place for the young ones to swim.

Getting To Morne Rouge Beach

It is not as accessibly as Grand Anse beach, because unlike it’s sister beach it isn’t close to the main road.
If you are already on grand anse beach and want to visit Morne Rouge Beach, then just walk southwards all the way to the end of Grand Anse Beach and go over the hill and you will be right smack on Morne Rouge Beach.
If you have a car follow the main road towards Grand Anse Beach, turn down one of the side streets leading to Spice Island Mall, go pass the Mall, continue on the road towards Cinnamon Hill hotel, and that road ends at Morne Rouge Beach.

Convenient Hotels and Restaurant

Morne Rouge Beach is smack in the tourist district if we can call it that, so finding proper hotel accommodations is easy. Two of the closest are Gem Holiday Beach Resort, and the Flamboyant hotel. There are many other fine hotels and guest houses within 1 – 2 mile of Morne Rouge Beach, take a look in our hotel accommodations directory to find one that delights you.

Looking for nearby restaurants? Grand Anse, True Blue and Lance Aux Pines areas, all are within 3 miles of Morne Rouge Beach, and boasts some of Grenada’s best places to eat. Here are some of my favorite Grenada Restaurants.

Also don’t overlook the option of packing a picnic basket for a day on Morne Rouge Beach. I’m sure your hotel will be happy to prepare a basket with some choice goodies just for the beach.

There are about 45 Grenada Beaches to choose from. Yes, you heard me right: 45 Grenada Beaches. Well … that sounds great, but to be honest it’s more beach than you, and I have the time, or energy to handle.

So how about a more manageable list? How about a Top Grenada Beaches list, so you can cut to the chase? Read on …

My Top 6 Grenada Beaches

Okay so let’s cut it down from 45 Grenada Beaches to the top 6 Grenada Beaches. We’re not throwing the other 39 beaches away, only putting them on reserve for you. If you ever get the urge to explore further, they’re all your’s for your enjoyment.

So let’s get to it, here are my top picks for the best Grenada Beaches

1. Grand Anse Beach

You will be hard pressed to find a more spectacular beach anywhere in the world, no kidding … and am not biased, that’s according to the many travel writers and visitors that swim, stroll, and soak up the sun, on this beach each and every year.

2. Morne Rouge Beach (BBC Beach)

Most locals refer to this one as BBC beach, am sure there is a story behind the name but I never bothered to inquire. Probably got the name from the BBC night club that once operated on the beach.

Morne Rouge Beach like Grand Anse beach lies in the heart of the hotel district, in the south of Grenada.

Holidays aside, this is one beach you can have all to yourself. It’s an interesting contrast of Lush green trees, white sands, and calm turquoise waters. When am looking for a more peaceful relaxing day I will choose Morne Rouge on a weekday.

And if you have small children, then this beach is probably one of your safest choices among all the Grenada Beaches. Morne Rouge Bay is sheltered, so the waves are often quite calm.

3. Magazine Beach

Another beautiful beach on Grenada’s Southwestern coast.

Magazine Beach, is is the home of the Rex Grenadian Hotel and the Aquarium Restaurant. The beach is about one mile of white sand, and clear blue waters.

Great food and drinks from Aquarium Restaurant, kayaking, and snorkeling all accentuate a fun day on this Grenada beach. Find out why Sunday is one of the best days to spend on this beach.

4. Pink Gin Beach

This one lies almost at the very tip of the island, behind the hill overlooking Point Salines International Airport.

Pink Gin Beach, is even more secluded than Morne Rouge Beach. Pinkish sand, pristine waters and a picturesque view of St. George welcomes you at Pink Gin Beach.

Add to that, the convenience of the La Source Hotel, the opportunity for all sorts of water sports; or just chill out and relax; and it’s easy to see why Pink Gin Beach is a top favorite.

5. Bathway Beach

A beautiful strip of white sand beach in the north of the island.

If you are looking for action … people, food, drinks, and just good times then Bathway beach on a Grenada holiday is the one place to be.

Of course like most Grenada beaches, during the weekdays and even on weekends you will feel like this long strip of sand is all yours. But before you take the plunge at Bathway beach be sure to read this …
