I had not heard of Umbrellas Beach Bar on Grand Anse Beach until Shara brought it to my attention. Thank You Shara. Here is her review and a few pics of Umbrella Beach Bar and Restaurant:

Hey Gooch,
Next time you’re in Grenada you should check out Umbrella’s Beach Bar, it’s on Grand Anse beach, you can get to it via the access road to the beach between Coyaba and St. George’s University (old campus). There’s enough parking at the end of the road and in front of the building.

We got there around 7:30 PM and were greeted by a friendly waitress. It’s a two level building, the seating on the upstairs has umbrellas off course; no umbrellas downstairs. We sat downstairs because it had been raining off and on that evening, although there were some people upstairs who didn’t seem to care about that.

Even though it was a weeknight it seemed to be relatively full, looked like an after work crowd was there as well as some visitors. We had our choice of sofa seating or tables, so we had our first drink on the sofa and dinner and the rest of the drinks at a table. The rum punch was pretty good, you could actually taste (and feel) the rum, (not sure if that’s a good or bad thing). My friend requested a drink that was not on the menu, gave the waitress the “recipe” and the bartender mixed it for her, it was good enough that she had two! Same with the rum punch for my sister and me.

The food is pretty tasty, my sister had the Grilled Veggie Salad and my friend had the Umbrellas Burger, they both said their dinner was good. I had the Catch Sandwich, on that day, the catch was Mahi Mahi and it was pretty good. It seems that you could have your choice of white or wheat bread, but on that day they were out of wheat bread. In general the food is appetizers, salads, sandwiches and desserts, all relatively light, nothing very heavy. I’m not a big drinker but from my perspective the drinks menu looked pretty good.

Umbrellas is not open very late, it’s closed on Mondays. Fridays and Saturdays it closes at 10, Tuesday – Thursday closes at 9 and I believe it closes at 8 on Sundays. A bell is literally rung at closing time, which I assumed was simply a last call, however, the waitress hurried us up to pay the bill because they had to close out the register! They started turning down the chairs and pulling down the windows shortly after that. It almost feels like you’re being chased out, we didn’t like that at all. So it’s the kind of place that you can go to if you’re spending the day on the beach, or if you want to have early dinner and drinks.

In general I would recommend Umbrellas Beach Bar, the food and drinks are good, the wait staff is friendly and nothing beats hanging out with friends having dinner and drinks, looking at St. George’s in the distance and listening to the waves crash ashore.

Cilia from neighboring Trinidad and Tobago wrote Grenada Beaches to ask an interesting question. The question in essence sums up the challenge that many business travelers to Grenada face… How to squeeze in some fun in the sun, and still get your work done?

Here’s Cilia’s situation:

Like myself, many people I know travel for work or study and are unable to participate in the day activities. They come back home having seen nothing but the conference hall and eat hotel food. In [date removed] I will travel for a conference at Grand Beach Hotel. I will stay there and will check in on Friday afternoon and leave on Monday midday (I have classes to teach on Thursday evening and Monday evening at home [Trinidad] so I cannot go early or stay extra time.

I imagine that the conference will go on up to as late as 6 pm each day.

• How can I still enjoy Grenada?
• Also, how can I move around without paying $40-$60 US for a hotel taxi to take me to town etc?

Below is my response (slightly edited).  Because she is tied up in conference every day,  everything has to be scheduled around her sessions.

My Response:

1. Grand Beach Hotel is on Grenada’s most popular beach — Grand Anse Beach — so that will cover your beach side of things. You can take an early morning dip before the conference starts, or relax in the evening after the conference. Friday after you check in is also a good option.




2. Grand Beach hotel is located right off the busiest bus route.
   
   

   ********Side Note*********
   This is true for many of the hotels in the Grand Anse area, not only Grand Beach. It’s a 5 or 10 minute walk to get to the main road, after which you will have several buses to choose from.
   ***************************

   There is bus stop right at the entrance/exit to Grand Beach. Catch the bus there and it takes you right into St. George’s. A 15 minute drive that will cost you about EC $2.00. Compare that to a US$40 taxi.

   You can explore every inch of St. George’s in a couple hours, if you plan it properly, and don’t dilly dally. Walk along the Carenage, visit the museum, visit Fort George, and pick up a few Souvenirs while you move about.

   Another option is to catch a bus early Saturday morning to St. George’s, and head over to the market. You’ll have sufficient time to get back for the start of your conference.

3. Gouyave Fish Friday is always fun. But it is a little out of the way. Ask your hotel front desk if they organize trips to Fish Fridays. Local tour companies are also a good option to inquire about. Finally, I heard Le Phare Bleu hotel, organizes a boat excursion up to Fish Friday. Give them a call to verify if this is true. Sounds like fun if you are not too scared of boats.




4. There are several Restaurants at other hotels along Grand Anse Beach, and many others within walking distance. One of my favorite hangouts is Rick’s Cafe right across the street from Grand Beach Hotel, and at the back of the Grand Anse Shopping Center. Good bites, and great ice cream.

Getting Around at Night

If you plan to do anything late evening/night (Club Karma maybe?) or out of the way, then you cannot escape taking a taxi. The safest bet is your hotel taxi, but they will charge you a lot.

If you are a savvy traveler (my guess is… you are), then while exploring St. George’s you can make contact with a taxi driver, and set things up for later. If you are uncomfortable with this then DO NOT do it; make alternate plans or use a hotel recommended taxi.

So Cilia (and anyone else) I hope this helps a bit. Grenada is safe enough to explore, and have some fun even with a tight business schedule. Always be aware of your surroundings, and do not take unnecessary risks, like walking by yourself, late at night, in poorly lit areas.

After a morning of much discussion about what would be our first activity in Grenada, we decided to go snorkeling. I’d never thought a non swimmer like myself would be snorkeling in Grenada.

Snorkeling in Grenada with Native Spirit Scuba

We chose Native Spirit Scuba on Grand Anse beach to do our snorkeling. When we arrived we were greeted by the owner Adrian and 2 of his divers. We filled out the necessary waivers etc, and then we were fitted for fins, and life jackets. We hopped on June, the dive boat, and headed up the western coast. We passed Pandy Beach, Port Louis Marina and took a tour around the inner harbor and Carenage. They were all beautiful.

Flamingo Bay

Our first destination was Flamingo Bay.  Dozens of Sergeant Major fishes surfaced as we threw pieces of bread into the water. Although I had on a life jacket when I got into the water I panicked. Shamar our trusted guide now seeing the magnitude of my fear immediately came to my assistance.

He calmly talked to me and was able to convince me to let go of the ladder on the side of the boat. He gently took me out into the water talking to me the entire time and was able to get me to relax and follow his instructions. I began to breathe and kick as instructed… low and behold we were over 150 feet away from the boat. I was constantly reassured, that I could do it. I couldn’t believe it… I did it!
There were so many beautiful fishes of all shapes, sizes and color. I was not able to see the true beauty of the corals because the water was a little murky.

The most awesome part was the feeding frenzy that took place right around us by the the Sergeant Majors. To feel the fishes against your skin was a little icky but nonetheless a fantastic experience at the same time.

Under Water Sculpture Park

The next stop was the world’s first Under Water Sculpture Park at Molinere. I again climbed into the water but this time it was a smoother transition. The water was very cold. I hate it when it’s cold so I was even more uncomfortable for a short while.

Shamar guided me to view all the sculptures. My favorites were the 26 life sized children holding hands while facing outwards, and the child on a bike. The rough sea had shifted some of the sculptures out of place but they were breathtaking. Surprisingly I continued to snorkel on my own and witnessed even more underwater beauty.

Native Spirit Scuba Rocks!!

I can not begin to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to Shamar. I can’t begin to tell you how it felt to be at ease in the sea. Even so much as to gain the confidence to snorkel alone. The Native Spirit Scuba ‘crew’ are fabulous! The snacks on board were delicious and rum punch even better. This is a 5 star recommendation. Adrian, and his guys are the best!

One of Grenada’s most popular scuba dive shops is Native Spirit Scuba, located in Grand Anse on the grounds of the Grenada Grand Beach Hotel. The diveshop is owned and operated by a Adrian (Sarge) and Rahel.

Sarge, a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, is an expert on the Grenada Diving scene,so I thought it would be worthwhile to pick his brain on typical concerns/questions that a prospective Grenada Scuba Diver might have.

If you have never dove in Grenada before you will find the answers to these question very helpful when researching a dive shop, and planning your trip.I hope you get some benefit from it.

1. What is the typical visibility? – 60 – 80 ft
2. What is the typical water temp during the year? – 27 – 28 degrees celcius
3. How long is the typical boat ride? – About 10 minutes
4. Is there shore diving? – Yes, there is shore diving, but not a lot. The reef at Flamingo Bay is shore accessible, also Dragon Bay from which you could swim into the next bay “Moliniere” to dive the Under Water Sculpture Park. Once you are a certified diver you can rent tanks from us.
5. What unique and exciting creatures are to be seen? – eagle rays, moray eels, turtles, sharks, lobsters and all Caribbean reef fishes, also a variety of corals
6. Is there any wreck diving? – There are many wrecks, including the “Bianca C” which is the largest cruise ship wreck in the Caribbean, 200 m long.
7. Do you have NITROX? – No
8. How many divers to a boat typically? – 2 – 10 divers, depending on season.
9. How deep is the average dive? – 60 ft
10. What experience level do you recommend for the dives? – different experience levels for different dive sights; for people without any experience, they can do a discover scuba course, which gets them to dive within 2 – 3 hours on a shallow, beautiful reef ( 40 ft). The discover scuba dive can be credited torwards the open water certification course.
11. How healthy are the reefs? – Most are in great condition
12. How adundant is the fish life? – There are fishes in abundance
13. What certifications do you recognize (e.g. PADI, NAUI, SSI)? – We are a PADI dive centre, but recognize all of the other certifications.
14. Do the boats have rinse tanks for camera
    gear? – Yes
15. Can you rent camera gear? –
    No, but we offer to take pictures and videos which you can purchase
    afterwards
16. Can I get certified on the island? –
    Definitely, right here with us; anything from open water diver all the
    way up to dive master. We also offer referral courses and scuba
    reviews( including one dive ) for those who haven’t been diving for
    several months or longer.
17. Do you offer specialty classes? –
    yes, we do deep diver, boat diver, drift diver, multilevel diver, night
    diver, underwater naturalist, wreck diver

My favorite place to eat in Grenada is actually not at any of the Grenada Restaurants. It’s at my Mom’s house. To me her home cooked Grenadian meals are the best. And to be honest I just had to make that point, lest I end up in the dog house on my next visit.

But since you probably won’t get a chance to try Moms Entrees, let’s talk about the next best place: Grenada Restaurants.

It’s no secret that Grenadians know good cooking. You will be hard pressed to find a Grenadian who doesn’t know their way around a kitchen. With such a demanding public to please you can bet that the food at all the Grenada Restaurants are a cut above good.

Here is a list of some of my favorite Grenada Restaurants. As I visit more of the top Grenada Restaurants this list will grow. And of course my comments about these Grenada Restaurants are a reflection of my taste and style.

Best Grenada Restaurants

Aquarium Restaurant – arguably the best restaurant of all the Grenada Restaurants. Looking for a beautiful truly Caribbean beach and rain forest feel? Go to Aquarium restaurant to celebrate that special occasion, for it’s awesome Sunday beach barbecue, or for drinks at it’s Mediterranean bar. To top it off it’s right on one of the best Grenada Beaches

True Blue Restaurant and Dodgy Dock – One of the few Grenada Restaurants where you can satisfy your desire for Mexican Cuisine. And it’s the only Grenada Restaurant I know where you can eat there every night for a week and not get bored. It’s not just the Grenadian, Mexican, American cuisine, it’s also the Marina, the Music, the different nightly themes, and mix of diners

De Big Fish Restaurant – For the best darn Grilled Swordfish I ever had try this Grenada Restaurant. A casual open air atmosphere sitting on the quiet waters bay. Great place to catch up with friends and knock back a few Caribs… (If you know of a place that serves a better Grilled swordfish tell me below)

Red Crab Restaurant – Nothing extraordinary about this Grenada Restaurant. They have a great reputation… I’ve known about them since I was a kid, so they must be doing something right to be around for such a long time. Traditional menu of seafood, beef, chicken, etc and overly pricey.

Rick’s Cafe – hands down the best Ice Cream on the island, perfect place to stop off after a day on Grand Anse beach. They also serve pizza, barbecue, sandwiches, and beers. Some of the staff has been there for as long as I can remember maybe (15 or more years)

Le Chateau restaurant – Crab Back (think Crab Cakes served in the Carb’s back/shell), Callaloo and French Onion Soup, Seafood Kebab, Garlic and Creole Shrimp, are just some of the mouth watering treats you will find here. It’s in the heart of Grand Anse in Le Marquis Shopping Plaza

Bananas Restaurant – at this Grenada Hotspot you get more than just a restaurant. Include the lively bar and the famous night club it’s easy to see why many consider this Grenada’s premier hangout.

The Beach House Restaurant – great for a special occasion, it has a more upscale feel, the food is great, and the wait staff is friendly. Also check out the beach if it’s in the day.

BB’s Crabback Restaurant – A popular restaurant in the heart of St. George’s on the Carenage. Read about visitor’s rave review.

Kudos Bar & Grill – well I can’t vouch for the food here but what I can tell you is that they host one helluva Happy Hour.

Nutmeg Restaurant – A favorite among locals and visitors alike. This is one of the oldest Grenada restaurants. It’s located on the beautiful Carenage. Ask to be seated at or close to the window, for the great views of the inner harbor. Martha Stewart visited The Nutmeg on her Grenada trip. At one time they were famous for their “Chicken Snack” – Fried Chicken and Fries (chips) with coleslaw.

Laurena Hotel Restaurant – You will have to take a scenic trip up to beautiful Carriacou, in the Grenadines, the tase the delicious Red Snapper, or mouth watering Peas Soup that we had at this restaurant. Small and clean, with friendly staff it’s a great option when in Carriacou.

Restaurant at SGU Campus Grand Anse Beach – On the old St. George’s University(SGU) Campus on Grand Anse Beach there is a excellent restaurant that serves some really good Grenadian Cuisine. Nothing facny, just good food, that’s all.

Victory Bar and Grill – Lunch, afternoon snack, or drinks this great spot in the lovely Port Louis Marina can fit either occasion. We had drinks there and enjoyed it. Conveniently located between Grand Anse and St. George’s.

Creole Shak – also on the Carenage and very close to the Nutmeg restaurant. This is a cafeteria style operation that’s very popular among locals for lunch, but the line moves quickly. It’s a great place to sample many different Grenadian foods at a very reasonable price.

The biggest complain I get about Caribbean and Grenada Restaurants is that they can be too slow. At Creole Shak I was eating within 5 minutes of getting in line … not bad at all, considering the good quality and variety of food items offered. And most importantly the food was all delicious. On Friday and Saturday nights there’s also karaoke.

The Melting Pot Sports Bar & Grill – very similar to the Creole Shak. I think it’s under the same management. A great option if you are in the town of Grenville and craving some wholesome Grenadian food. The boasts French Creole Cuisine Grenadian style as their signature taste.

Gouyave Fish Friday – This one is NOT a Grenada Restaurant, but since we are talking about good places to eat, I thought we should throw it in. Gouyave Fish Fridays is an outdoor event, held every Friday in the coastal village of Gouyave.

It’s a Seafood lover dream come true. So if you are up to tasting the very best seafood Grenada has to offer, and you like hanging out with the local folks then check out Gouyave Fish Fridays.

And Now it’s your Turn…

As you can see there are tons of really good Grenada Restaurants and eateries missing from this list. The truth is I will never ever be able to try them all out.

1. First I’m just one guy who visits Grenada only twice a year for at most 2 weeks at a time
2. And second even when I’m in Grenada it’s tough to leave those home cooked Oil Down and Fish Broth that Moms and the boys prepare to go out to eat.

A Secret Grand Anse Beach Restaurant

You won’t read about this Grand Anse Beach Restaurant in any Grenada travel brochure, and it won’t be on your hotel’s top list of Grenada Restaurants… heck they probably don’t even know it exists. But this restaurant, ran by a group of women on the old St. George’s University (SGU) campus, on Grand Anse Beach, serves up some of the yummiest Grenadian food you will find anywhere on the island. No frills and fluffs, no garnish and varnish, just plain old Grenadian food just the way their Moms, Grand Moms and Auntie thought them to cook it.

I’m talking about :

• Curry Chicken, Curry Beef
• Beef/ Chicken Roti
• Brown Chicken Stew,
• Stewed Fish, Baked Fish, Fry Fish
• Pumpkin, Callaloo, Vegetables
• Fried plantains
• Macaroni Pie
• Rice and Peas
• Oildown (Grenada’s national dish)
• And the usual international suspects (sandwiches, fries, pizza, etc.)

Are you hungry yet?

Warning!

Now this is no place for a romantic dinner, in fact they don’t do dinner. There is nothing fancy about the place itself, its open air but covered. It’s right smack on the beach with a lovely view of St. George’s and up the North West Coast.

If you looking for something with all the bells and whistles don’t waste your time. All you will get here is tasty Grenadian Cuisine the way Grenadians prepare and serve it… and a few international items if you must have that.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the ladies close up shop during the summer when the students are on vacation. Remember that when traveling to Grenada in the summer time.

Just wanted to make that point.

So when you are on Grand Anse Beach and the hunger bites, head to the Medical School Campus. Its between Coyaba Hotel and Aquanauts Dive Shop. You can ask for the Thomas Sisters, three of the women who do their magic in the kitchen. Or you can ask for Ms. Rosie, another master cook… she’s been there the longest. They each run their own independent eatery under the same roof.

A Little History

Before the SGU Medical School moved from Grand Anse Beach to the new campus in True Blue, this was the main campus for all students, and the restaurant was established specifically to service the medical students. I can remember late afternoons when all tables will be packed for dinner, lively chatter everywhere, and captivating aroma that will make your mouth water.

Oh and if you are wondering whether there is a connection between the Med School and the US Invasion, the answer is Yes. Back in the Regan Era in 1983 US troops invaded Grenada to rescue about 21 students studying at this very campus of the St. George’s University School of Medicine.

After the main campus moved to True Blue the women continued to cook for the general public and the few remaining staff at the old campus.

I’ve been eating at that place since I was in High School. Every Friday we would hit the beach, and we look forward to the Pizza from Ms. Rosie (yes they can make Pizza too) as much as the we looked forward to beach. I still think that the best Pizza I’ve had in Grenada was from this wonderful Grand Anse Eatery, even better than Ricks Cafe. That was a long, long time ago but I’m sure it’s still tasty as ever.

It is a wonderfully simple place to find a great meal. The seafood is amazing. I especially like their exquisite lambie beach. Conveniently located on Grand Anse Beach -arguably one of the best beaches in the world- Coconut Beach restaurant is hard to miss.

Next time you are in Grenada, drop by there. The friendly staff and wonderful dishes will have you going back for more.

This beach was both picturesque and charming without losing the local and laid back style. Despite being infamous for being the most tourist ridden spot, this St George’s stretch is so far the most stunning and mesmerizing beach I’ve ever seen. I thoroughly recommend it to all in Grenada.

Okay so let’s cut it down from 45 Grenada Beaches to the top 6 Grenada Beaches. We’re not throwing the other 39 beaches away, only putting them on reserve for you. If you ever get the urge to explore further, they’re all your’s for your enjoyment.

So let’s get to it, here are my top picks for the best Grenada Beaches

1. Grand Anse Beach

You will be hard pressed to find a more spectacular beach anywhere in the world, no kidding … and am not biased, that’s according to the many travel writers and visitors that swim, stroll, and soak up the sun, on this beach each and every year.

2. Morne Rouge Beach (BBC Beach)

Most locals refer to this one as BBC beach, am sure there is a story behind the name but I never bothered to inquire. Probably got the name from the BBC night club that once operated on the beach.

Morne Rouge Beach like Grand Anse beach lies in the heart of the hotel district, in the south of Grenada.

Holidays aside, this is one beach you can have all to yourself. It’s an interesting contrast of Lush green trees, white sands, and calm turquoise waters. When am looking for a more peaceful relaxing day I will choose Morne Rouge on a weekday.

And if you have small children, then this beach is probably one of your safest choices among all the Grenada Beaches. Morne Rouge Bay is sheltered, so the waves are often quite calm.

3. Magazine Beach

Another beautiful beach on Grenada’s Southwestern coast.

Magazine Beach, is is the home of the Rex Grenadian Hotel and the Aquarium Restaurant. The beach is about one mile of white sand, and clear blue waters.

Great food and drinks from Aquarium Restaurant, kayaking, and snorkeling all accentuate a fun day on this Grenada beach. Find out why Sunday is one of the best days to spend on this beach.

4. Pink Gin Beach

This one lies almost at the very tip of the island, behind the hill overlooking Point Salines International Airport.

Pink Gin Beach, is even more secluded than Morne Rouge Beach. Pinkish sand, pristine waters and a picturesque view of St. George welcomes you at Pink Gin Beach.

Add to that, the convenience of the La Source Hotel, the opportunity for all sorts of water sports; or just chill out and relax; and it’s easy to see why Pink Gin Beach is a top favorite.

5. Bathway Beach

A beautiful strip of white sand beach in the north of the island.

If you are looking for action … people, food, drinks, and just good times then Bathway beach on a Grenada holiday is the one place to be.

As a young boy growing up, nothing could compare to a day on Grand Anse Beach. I love that beach … the sand goes forever in both directions, and with the exception of public holidays, grand anse beach is never crowded … it feels like it’s all mine.

My friends and I practically lived in the water, emerging only for snacks, or to play in the warm sand.

At the end of the day our fingers and lips will be wilted from the exposure, but to us it was always worth it.

Grand Anse beach can have that effect on you … it makes kids feel at home, and adults feel like kids again.

Choosing the Best Spot

With two miles of perfect white sand there is something for everyone. You can sub divide grand anse beach in three parts: The South Side, The Park Side, The North Side, each is as lovely as the other but suit different tastes.

1. The South Side

   

   Stroll down to the south end and you are sure to see a few couples enjoying the scenery and each others company.

   Insert yourself in these beach chairs. The further south you go on grand anse beach the more secluded it gets.

   The famous and pricey Spice Island Inn Resort is located on this side, so it is normal to see guests enjoying the beach. But it is still the quietest, and most private part of Grand Anse Beach.

   
   

2. The Park Side

   Use the Camahogne Park entrance to get to The Park Side. Here’s a few things about this part the beach:

   

   • Most accessible entry point if you are not driving. The bus stop is a 3 minute stroll away.
   • Most convenient parking
   • It’s the middle of the beach … easy to go South Side or North Side from here
   • Favorite spot of the Locals
   • Shopping Mall right across the street

   This is one of the things that make Grand Anse beach so special … the view of the green rolling hills and the back drop of the city.

3. The North Side

   Further up on the North side you will find mainly hotel guests soaking up the Grenadian sunshine. This side of Grand Anse Beach can be filed with beach chairs and tourists when several cruise ships are in port.

   The vendors market is also on the this side of the Grand Anse beach. There you can do some shopping for local crafts, spices and apparel, that make great gifts. So even if you prefer the Park Side or South Side, you might want to swing by the vendors market and see what tickles your fancy.

Braids, Serenade and Straw Hats …

Wherever you might be on the beach expect a kind vendor or two to come by and offer to braid your hair, serenade you with local calypso, or maybe make you an authentic coconut straw hat on the spot. Its all part of the Grand Anse experience. If you are not interested a polite no thank you is normally enough to get the vendor to move along.
